Warner Bros released a third trailer for the upcoming feature The Color Purple, which is an adaptation of the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker.Â
The film is set to release in the US on December 25 and internationally on January 18, 2024. The Color Purple is backed by Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones.
Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film is set against the backdrop of 1900s America and will follow a young woman of colour and her struggles to navigate. Actors Halle Bailey and Phylicia Mpasi have been cast as sisters Nettie and Celia who bear the brunt of the discriminatory society.Â
Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Fantasia Barrino round out the cast of The Color Purple. Marcus Gardley who won the WGA award for Maid, had penned the screenplay for the film.Â
The first adaptation of the novel was made in 1985 with Whoopi Goldberg and Akosua Busia starring as the sisters in Steven Spielberg’s directorial. Â
