The People's Joker gets release date

The People’s Joker, the queer parody film starring Vera Drew in the lead, will now release in America on April 5.

Drew is not only the lead but has also helmed, co-written and edited the upcoming film, which is billed to be a coming-of-age queer parody superhero film. The film will feature Drew as the aspiring clown Joker the Harlequin, who realises her gender identity as a trans woman. Based on the characters in the DC comics, the film is also inspired by Drew’s own life.

Last year, when the film was planned to have a premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, the makers received a letter from DC owner Warner Bros. Discovery. The production house asked her not to project the film in public, but Drew went ahead with the premiere. However, the absurdist film did not make it to other screenings.

In a statement as per a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Drew said, “This movie started as a DIY community project for queer artists and I made it with my friends to process what it was like coming out as a trans woman working in the film and TV industry. It has been a long road freeing The People’s Joker and finding a release plan that rings true to the queer, anarchist spirit we had while making it. What better home than among Altered Innocence’s catalogue of gorgeously gay and deliciously edgy films.”

Lynn Downey, Kane Distler, Nathan Faustyn, David Liebe Hart, and Phil Braun among others form the supporting cast of The People’s Joker. Bri LeRose has written the film along with Drew. Joey Lyons has backed the film under the Haunted Gay Ride Productions banner.
