Ryan Gosling reacts Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub, says there’s no Ken without Barbie- Cinema express

Ryan Gosling registered his disappointment after director Greta Gerwig and lead actor Margot Robbie were not nominated in two major categories for Barbie at the 2024 Academy Awards.

Gosling, who played Ken opposite Robbie’s Barbie in Gerwig’s 2022 blockbuster based on the iconic Mattel doll, found a place in the final five of the best supporting actor category during the Academy Awards nominations, announced on Tuesday evening.

“It’s an understatement to say I’m disappointed that Greta and Margot were not nominated in their respective categories. Their work should be recognised along with the other very deserving nominees,” Gosling said in a statement reacting to them not receiving a nomination.

The detailed statement further mentioned that he was honoured and proud to have played the character. “I am extremely honoured to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honoured and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”

The actor also expressed his joy for co-star America Ferrera, who received a nomination for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Gloria in the film.

Citing that there is no existence of Ken without Barbie he said, “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”

He also added, “Gerwig and Robbie managed to create a movie that not only made audiences laugh and broke their hearts but also pushed the cultural boundaries, making history in the process.”

Gosling is nominated alongside Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things

The live-action adaptation of the movie, which brought back the iconic doll to life and soon became a critical and commercial success across the globe and earned $ 1.44 billion worldwide and holds 16th position among the biggest films in terms of worldwide collection in history. The film is also said to be the biggest film ever to be directed by a woman.

The film stars Margot Robbie in the lead role as the Stereotypical Barbie and Ryan Gosling playing Ken. The film also features America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell, among others.
