Hell’s Paradise Jigokuraku (Season 1), Episode 7 Recap:

“Flowers and Offerings”

The episode begins with the two girls kissing each other, noticing Choubei and Touma, and they ask what humans are doing here. Touma finds them attractive and wonders what they are doing on an island like this. Choubein retorts by asking them not to pretend they weren’t humans and, if they weren’t, they were like the other monsters. One of those girls challenges them to fool around. Choubei and Touma are taken aback. The two girls turn into men and threaten to kill them.

Gabimaru tells the group that on this mysterious island, it does not matter if hermits live there, but what matters the most is knowing if they are their friends or foes. As they are conversing, Gabimaru sees a girl eavesdropping. Gabimaru chases her, and at that moment, a bonsai creature starts to attack Gabimaru. He and Sagiri chase the girl to find leads about the island, leaving Senta and Yuzuriha to fight the Bonzai monster. Yuzuriha wants to test her Ninjitsu on the monster to see if it would work.

Gabimaru catches up to the girl only to be attacked by her with full power. Sagiri tries to reason with her by saying they wanted to ask questions and not harm her, but she attempts to attack Sagiri. Nevertheless, Gabimaru takes the blow, making him bleed. He warns her again that he intends to go easy on her but is desperate too. He pulls the roots of the trees to tangle her. Subsequently, she starts crying loudly, and upon Sagiri’s words, he lets her loose. They realize that she is only a child. Yuzuriha catches up to them and enquires about what is going on.

They realize they can ask the girl about the elixir of life only after she stops crying. The defeated Bonsai monster starts to speak. He requests the group to give the child back to him. In return, he would take them to the village, which has food. Yuzuriha responds by saying that they had plenty of food. But he cuts a deal with them by offering to take them to baths at the village. The group finally agrees to this deal. Sagiri wonders Gabimaru if it would be okay to trust a stranger. He responds by saying it is okay as long as someone knows about the elixir of life. At that moment, they reach the village only to find it deserted.

The bonsai monster explains that the village wasn’t like this a thousand years ago. Bonsai monster takes them to his house, and Gabimaru wants to question him about the elixir of life. But Yuzuriha is more interested in taking a warm bath. Yuzuriha invites Gabimaru to join her, but he declines the offer. She tells him that Sagiri is taking a break too, but she says that she was there to keep an eye on her. However, as soon as she gets into the water, she can’t resist the calmness it gives her.

Gabimaru warns Senta not to drink from the bowl as they know nothing about those monsters, which could be dangerous. But when food is brought to the table, Senta can no longer hold back. The bonsai monster refuses to answer Gabimaru’s question about his relationship with the child. He then goes on to ask about the elixir of life. Yuzuriha interrupts them by gobbling down some food. As they eat, the bonsai monster begins to tell the tale of the village. He tells them that he does not know what the humans call the village, but they call it Kotaku.

The bonsai monster then tells them that Shinsenkyo is the land of God. Gabimaru is disinterested in history and only wants to know if the elixir of life exists. The bonsai monster responds by saying that it is a legend passed down by ancient times and that it does exist. The elixir of life in the legend is called Tan. Gabimaru asks him where the elixir is. He explains that the island is divided into three regions the shore and woods, known as Eishu, and the third region is the village they are in, known as Hojo. Moreover, he tells them that the elixir of life is the innermost, central part of the village known as Horari- the center of Shinsenkyo.

Hell's Paradise Jigokuraku Season 1 Episode 7

Senta is excited to listen to this information. Gabimaru asks him if he has seen it and if he isn’t lying. The bonsai monster only answers in codes by saying they will see Tensen soon, and then they’ll know if he was bluffing or not. Meanwhile, Choubei and Touma are fighting a Tensen who explains that they might have fought the other monsters but can’t fight them as they never die or age. As Choubei attacks, Tensen breaks his axe.

The bonsai monster informs them that it might seem strange to give out valuable information, but he knows that nobody can defeat Tensen. It is their last mission, as Tensen doesn’t allow humans to leave the island, and everyone human who enters the island dies. The Tensen defeated Choubei and Touma. The bonsai monster tells the group that he is speaking the truth and that Tensen is the most important creature on the island as they command the Shoshin and kill the guilty.

He also tells them that the sinners don’t just die but are reborn as flowers beyond worldliness. As the bonsai monster explains, we see visuals of this being true, as we see Touma and Choubei being thrown into a pit with beautiful flowers whose roots tangle Choubei. Despite Touma’s efforts, Choubei turns into a flower. The bonsai monster explains to the group that the ones who are killed are the source of Tan.

Yuzuriha tells him that it was a legend after all, to which the bonsai monster shows proof of the elixir by cutting off one of his hands, which regenerates. He also tells them that the fate of the humans who enter the island depends on the gods, and it is challenging to leave the island. Gabimaru and Sagiri discuss the possibilities of the elixir of life.

It is revealed that the name of the bonsai monster is Hoko. The girl’s name is Mei, and they have been living on the island for centuries. Both Gabimaru and Sagiri seem skeptical to believe every bit of information given to them. Gabimaru tells Sagiri that all the riddles can be solved later. But first, they have to wait and watch if Tensen would allow them to take the elixir of life.

Sagiri takes a liking to Mei and teaches her bathing etiquette and how to use different products to keep herself clean while asking Gabimaru to rest. At the bath, Gabimaru is reminded of his wife and the times she spent helping him wash and discuss life and its battles. He tells Mei not to be ashamed of her scars and that appearances don’t matter. Upon hearing this, Sagiri is dumbfounded. The three of them walk back. Soon, Sagiri realizes Gabimaru isn’t so bad after all, and he seems to be changing for the better. The episode ends with Gabimaru being hyper-focused on his mission.

Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku (Season 1), Episode 7 Ending, Explained:

The episode ends with warmth as we see Sagiri showing maternal instincts towards Mei and thinking about Gabimaru with more compassion. In this episode, we see Choubei being tangled by the roots and stems of the flowers, However, we don’t know what happens after that. Will Touma somehow survive? If he does, it will be a hard battle for him on the island as it was throughout his life; he has depended on his brother to rescue and fight. This episode steered towards emotions from Hoko being protective about Mei and Sagiri and Gabimaru showing warm feelings.

After knowing everything about the elixir of life, it will be interesting to see how Gabimaru and the group will work together to get the elixir. Or will this be time to see Gabimaru separate from Yuzuriha for the battle of the elixir of life? Will Mei help Gabimaru and Sagiri find the elixir and leave the island alive? Hoko drops an Easter egg by saying that the gods determine the fate of humans, so there are chances for Gabimaru and Sagiri to survive.

The episodes are also taking an interesting turn as they kill off every main character. It is curious to know how the anime will take things forward. The next episode may be more action-filled than this episode, which focused mainly on the storyline.
