Zakir Hussain won the Grammy for Best Global Music Performance at the Grammy Awards 2024 held in Los Angeles on February 5. He won the honour for the song ‘Pashto’ alongside Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Rakesh Chaurasia. Along with that, the Tabla maestro also won the Grammy in the category of Best Global Music Album which he shared with the members of his band Shakti for their album ‘This Moment’.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also nominated in the category along with Indian-American singers Falu and Gaurav Shah, for a special song, ‘Abundance in Millets’. The other nominees in the category were Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily for ‘Shadow Forces’, Burna Boy for ‘Alone’, Davido for ‘Feel‘, Silvana Estrada for ‘Milagro Y Disastre’, Bela Fleck, Ibrahim Maalouf featuring Cimafunk and Tank and the Bangas for ‘Todo Colores’.
With the two wins on Monday, Zakir Hussain now has a total of three Grammys to his name. He won his first Grammy in the year 2009 in the category of Contemporary World Music Album for Global Drum Project which he shared with Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo.
