Pre-Eid blues can well be seen as occupancy in theatres is staying on to be largely low. As it is, it’s quite difficult to get audiences into theatres and during Ramzan, it becomes even tougher, especially if a film is catering to the mass segment as you need to get a larger population to step into theatres.

Box Office: Gumraah flops, Bholaa has a fair weekend with good Sunday growth

No wonder, there are hardly any films releasing and the ones which are in theatres are finding it increasingly difficult to fetch audience attention. This can well be seen for the newest arrival Gumraah, which had a poor weekend with merely Rs 4 crores* coming in. Not that it’s much surprising since one could gauge such kind of a response prior to the release itself. There wasn’t much awareness amongst the audience around the arrival of the film and that had a telling in collections over the weekend, which stayed very ordinary. There would be further dip in numbers during the weekdays and the film would close shop after the first week itself.

As for Bholaa, it’s managing to hang in there with the second weekend bringing on Rs 12.25 crores*. Of course, it should be earning a lot more since Ajay Devgn has made a film entirely catering to the masses for whom there are several seeti-taali moments. However, with Ramzan season around, the audience base has been reduced in a big way. Otherwise, basis merits, the film deserved at least Rs 15 crores more to have come by. Thankfully, Sunday saw a good jump in collections and that’s what has put the overall numbers to Rs 72.50 crores*. This would ensure a theatrical run in the late 80s with an outside chance of hitting the Rs 90 crores mark too.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
